The Bride Price

Which of these statements from the story do you agree or disagree with? Choose one and give your reasons.

1. Aku-nna should not have left with Chike. Respecting the traditions is more important than love.

2. Okonkwo was right to refuse Ofulue's money for Aku-nna's bride price.

3. If Aku-nna's parents had received the money, she would not have died.

4. A mother should always protect and support their children. This was excatly what Ma Blackie did.

5. Chike is responsible for Aku-nna's death. She was too young to have a baby.

  1. 1. I think that Aku-nna did right. Sometimes it's necessary to think in ourselves first instead of the others. For example, she would not live happy if she stayed with someone who she didn't want. Even though she died young she was happy.
    2. No, he wasn't right. Chike's family were trying to act according to their laws, and the only and truly reason of why Okonkwo didn't accept the bride price was because Aku-nna had escaped with Chike, and he wouldn't be the chief.
    3. It's just superstition, a legend that old people tell their daughters to not do the same as Aku-nna. In fact, Aku-nna died because of their condition, she was skinny and weak, and she was 16 years old, she wasn't ready to have babies at that age.
    4. It's true that a mother should always support and protect their children, but Ma Blackie didn't do that exactly. Since she was pregnant she couldn't refuse to her husband's orders, no matter if it hurt her daughter, making her unhappy for the rest of her life.
    5. It's not like he was guilty of Aku-nna's death, but both of them were responsible. They knew that Aku-nna was weak and too small for her age. It was like a child having another child.

  2. I disagree with the first statements. They love each other and it was the only way for them to stay together. Unfortunately, according to Ibos traditions it was impossible for them to be happy in Ibuza. Respecting traditions is important but true love is stronger than everything in this world. Personally this is not one of my favorite books, because I did not like the end, but it has taught me a lot. Sometimes doing the things according rules or traditions do not mean doing things well. All is possible if you act according your beliefs, judgments, values and feelings but it is important too that all things will come in due time and sometimes it is better to wait because Aku-nna and Chike would been a family, but she was too young to have a baby.

  3. I disagree with the first statement. They could choose not to run away, but they would not be happy. These traditions had very strict rules in which an innocent girl was sold to a man for a high price. To my mind, that situation is outrageous and nonsense; nobody should be considered as an object. Furthermore, the love between two people is the most beautiful feeling, but as others say, " Love is sweet torment". Aku-nna and Chike went through difficult situations, such as, her bride price, the opposition of her family and her kidnapping. With their love they could resettle and start a new life for a short period of time, but unfortunately Aku-nna was too young to have a baby, so she passed away. In conclusion, this story has taught me that no matter what, people have to love and be loved.

    1. Don't you think that all these problems they had to endure were a clear sign that Aku-nna and Chike were not meant to be together?

  4. I disagree with many of the traditions that are exposed in this story, but
I have to mention that the era in which these fact happened is very
different from today; althoughI think that Chike made a mistake to run away
with Aku-nna since she was just a teenager. independently of the time in
which you live, life has stages for everything, including love. like every
girl, Aku-nna wanted to find her perfect man who will replace the care and
love that she lost with the death of her father. We all know that one of
the stages more risks in the life of a woman is in her pregnancy and even
more when this still is a teenager. Chike and Aku-nna like many young
people of our time, made the mistake of falling prey to the impulses of
love, but to be older than her, he had to wait to have a child because they
were unprepared and not even had solver the problem on the bride price. on
the other hand, nobody knows what will happen in the future and Chike never
thought about hurting Aku-nna; however, he being a man prepared and
intelligent not know how to prevent this. consequently, the end of this
story served as an example for many young people within the tradition of
    Nigeria.

    1. I agree with you. Chike should have been more responsible. Eventhough nowadays girls do not have to marry when still young, this could be a good example of what happens when a girls intends to do what only grown-up women are able to do.

  5. I disagree with the second statement, the decision Okonkwo wasntt good, if the end was not going to stay with Aku-nna ay she told him she wasn’t a virgin and that was the reason for not accepting the bride price although Chike's father offered double the price, they didn’t accept, even angry that there should not have been denied, and so Akunna hadn’t died. In my opinion, I disagree that men could have more one wife and women only one husband. Well back to the topic I don’t think the decision to Okonkwo was the best, as it was part of his family, his cousin, and even hated because she never loved him, no reason to let her die. Her mother had also helping her Aku-nna and force Okonkwo to accept the bride price. All had done something, but Aku-nna didn’t want to follow the traditions, was her life that was at risk. Okonkwo was very selfish to lay off Aku-nna and her to be happy. If he wanted to be a chief should have accepted the bride price Chike's father offered them.

    1. I agree with you, Okonkwo was wrong to reject the bride price that could receive by Aku-nna. However, I believe that the problem is not only Okonkwo but is also the tradition; because the beliefs expressed in this story are what make that everyone committed different errors. By as Okonkwo has been described was a materialistic person who thought only himself and his reputation and his reputation that discriminate bride price that was offered by Chike´s Family. on the other hand ,in a society where the birth of a daughter receives blessing since this in the future will bring money is an empty society, likewise, this shows that in the past women were treated more as an item than as a person who has the right to make their own decisions. I think the only bride price that a father could be obtained by a daughter is love and respect that her couple can give her .

  6. I disagree with the second statement. Okonkwo was wrong to refuse Ofulue's money for Aku-nna's bride price. Chike's father had enough money to pay for Aku-nna and helped Okonkwo to become a chief, but i think Okonkwo was blind with his pride and refused to accept the money just because Chike came from a slave family. I realized that Okonkwo was a selfish person who just though in himself and forgot about the happiness of his new daughter. If Okonkwo had accepted the money, everything would have been easier for Aku-nna and Chike. And all the speculations about the bride price and the death of Aku-nna had been disappeared.

  7. I disagree with the first statements. Aku-nna and Chike could be happy together and have a nice family because they were in love but they could not fulfill their dreams. They lived in Ibiza was a place that have many traditions. The traditions do not permit to be together and . People have to fulfill mandatorily, but I think that the feeling is more strong and important than the tradiciones since the true love is very difficult find and keep. I consider that the end of this story is very hard though they lived bad things like kidnap. they fought for their love and although there were people who did not want them to be together they overcame every obstacle and were successful but then they had a baby and she immediately died. 8. I disagree with the fifth statement. According to the story, Chike was not liable to the death of aku-nna. I consider that Okonkwo was liable and also she She was too young to have a baby. I think that hey were in love and fought to be together and she want to have a baby. They fought to have a nice family because mom's husband did not want that Akunna married with chike. Okoboshi want the bride price for this reason he was not agree. Chike was very good with her and wanted that Aku-nna will get her certificated. Chike wanted to marry with her and also, have a life with her. This terrible end was fated but despite the death of akunna they had also the chance to be together and the baby will be the most important person in his life. Melissa Peña Sevillano

    1. But babies always need their mom. Chike should have been more responsible and anticipated the risks of getting pregnant at an early age.

  9. I disagree with the first sentence . For several years people do that their beliefs or traditions , but in some case these decisions not the correct . In others countries parents who choose the husband or wife for their children , but they not think that their children want . Akunna and Chike only wanted to be happy and had a beautiful family even Chike’s family wanted to paid the bride price but this not enough because he and his family were slave . Akunna and Chike were in love despite all the obstacles they had for their tradition. If Akuna’s family had allowed the bride price by Chike, she would not have left with he. Nowadays , the decisions are chosen by ourselves and our happiness also depends on us .

  10. I agree with the sentence number four , all mothers are in this world to protect and support their children with the decisions they make in your life, in the case of the mother of Akunna was her moral obligation to support it because it put first up the happiness of her daughter , so Akunna not an unhappy wife with a man whom she did not love .
Although her daughter died very young, she supported and granddaughter born of love between Akunna and Chike a love that broke the barriers of the traditions of their country.
Finally , the love of a mother goes against everything and everyone is able to sacrifice for the happiness of their children.
