Senior 3: Slavery, Racism & Segregation

Dear Students,

While reading the book and watching the videos about Martin Luther King and crucial events against segregation, I could learn how hard life for black people was in the past. It is unbelievable how the whole world watched these inhuman, cruel, brutal events that African Americans endured and nobody could do anything to solve this situation. Nowadays, in my opinion (and I am sure you agree with me) all these attacks look ridiculous since it is really hard to understand how people used to judge someone based on the color of his/her skin.

What about today? There might be similar events that future generations will find intolerant and completely unnecessary. Post a 50-word comment describing a situation you feel sorry for and you wish you could change.

    1. Well in my opinion this was so bad for the black people, I cannot imagine how much they suffered. But today the racism isn't a problem, I think that the problems are the wars in countries like Irak, Siria, there are a lot of terrorism and people died and the fault is not of them, is about the goverment that don't do anything to stop these.. This is very sad, I'm sure that future generations will sorry about this.

  2. Something similar is the situation that suffered the immigrants in other countries. For example in many states of USA exist the discrimination for this people. When they are deported are attacked sometimes, there are problems with the right to health and education, and others but nowdays the Senate is discussing the new immigration laws, for that immigrants take the streets to try that this laws benefit them and the states.

    1. And it is a right for any person in the world, if someone travels to another country and lives his or her family alone I think that could be for a good reason, that maybe to improve their economic situation. The other government should help the people who really need it

  4. Every time I see this kind of situation I can't understand How people in that time have this kind of believes, how did they accepted this kind of attacked to innocents people. Even though this happened long time ago, nowadays some similar situations still happen in our society, I wonder why there are people who mistreats older people, there have been a lot of cases in which attacked, and abuse older ones. They don't know that I any moment they would get older, and they wouldn't like to be treat as the same way they treat others. We need to inculcate the value of respect, consideration and love for the elderly. They are our greatest references to know more about the past and how manage in the future. For something these people have lived longer

    1. You are right! Today, while I was doing some shopping, I was thinking of this task, and the same idea came to my mind. How is it possible that many elderly people are left on the streets? In other cultures, they are admired since they represent wisdom! I am sure our future generations will feel sorry for that!

  5. I have always thought a type of segregation that everybody live today and will live in the future, is the domain of the riches. Only the 20% of world population owns the 98% of the riches of world, so the 80% of world population live with the 2% of the riches of world. This reality affect us because we would be the slaves of few, while we work to survive, others work to increase their riches.

  6. well I think that racism still exists in the united states for example in schools still discriminate against whites mistreat blacks parents do not let too have black friends so I think they should train parents and young people to make know that we are all equal and that no matter the skin color we are all children of God

  7. I think that nowadays society still judging others based on the skin color, with the difference that they dont do it so openly as some years ago. Black people and indigenous are two of the poorest ethnical groups here in Ecuador, because of prejudice and lack of access to education and opportunities. Other actual discrimination example is what LGBTI suffer everyday, some places dont allow gays to enter and they cant get married; after a few years the future generations will be disappointed of us. Another unfair event that still taking place in the world are the xenophobic crimes against latinos and other foreign groups in Europe and the USA. Although people mind is changing, there is a lot of work to do, otherwise the world will continue being an unfair place.

  9. I think that in today there are so many religions in the world, but that is not the main problem, I consider that the problem is the fanaticism which believers put in practice, in their religions. The fanaticism in any subject is not good, it makes people do things that is against of the god love; like fighting, making wars, kill people, being intolerant with our brothers like if we had the absolutely true; who knows after all??. I am not a saint, but I know that we don't have the right of taking the life of people in the famous name of god, WE ARE NOT GOD and we can't judge people who think differently of us. I don't believe in any religion, I just believe in god and I try to do the best I can in my life, always thinking in the principal commandment that god taught us, to love all our brothers after all. That is a situation of today but it will be more intolerant in the future if we are not mature enough to don’t let us fall in the irrationalism.

    1. I agree with Rose. Fanaticism is the cause of almost every human conflict, because it blinds men and make a group of people think they have the true so they believe they have the right to force others to think as them. I dont believe in any religion too, but I think everyone have the right to believe or do whatever they want unless they are injuring someone.

  10. Watching the videos, I think life classes last was absurd to discrimination with skin color or if you were poor, rich people or people of color top white was believed better, not understand that if even so all are equal only changes color or position in society Today that has changed a little white longer feel disgusted to be with blacks think, which is more in Ecuador is discrimination not have money or high social status. I trust that for a next future everything will be full of peace love and happiness without discrimination.

  11. all my life I will have pain in my soul for discrimination, God created us, we are his children and he loves us equally. today no racism as before but people keep trying to black people with discrimination and this is a situation that will never stop until they come to see the importance of each in this life. I would do anything to stop discrimination and I would give my life for them know that they are like my brothers and they have my support and I love them

  12. About my opinion I think that we all are equal nobody is more that nobody, God I us believe and loves his all equally. In this time the discrimination was more big, now I think that we know what our brothers suffered and it must diminish black being does not have anything of villain and because of it always they were the wars and it must go changing from generation to generation and to have clear that God is the only one that can judge us nobody more

  14. Maria Encalada.
The black people in the past were extremely stronger to bear slavery, violence, discrimination, humiliation and racism, it was frightful. But In that time they had full of hope, inside of their hearts to be free because they believed in God and he chose a special man Martin Luther King who helped and made their dreams came true. Actually Must people are still victims of it like our migrant who are living in a strange land working hard to give a financial support for their families, who have a comfortable lifestyle .

  15. well personally i think that the discrimination will always exist in the actuallity we can see about the discrimination in many countries and is sure that this trouble will exist in the future but i don't kwon why the discrimination? i still don't see an action against the black people.

  16. We know that black people suffered a lot of violent events the past years, pitifully there wasn't the same rights for everyone, but thanks to the hope that they had God helped them to get equal rights. However nowadays there is still racism and it's something that is hard to change, but we as reasonable people must to keep fighting against this event.

  17. I think the world was, has been and continues to be cruel. Everybody have the right but not everybody being is respected as such. There isn't law that changes the human mind. just look at our country many people are discriminated by the color of their skin or their economic position. The mind is not to be changed is the heart ..

  18. THERE HATE DESCRIMINATION WORLDWIDE, WHETHER IN THE MONEY IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES OR FOR THE DIFFERENCE OF DIFFERENT RACE, NOT AGREE TO ANYTHING WITH THE PROBLEM EXISTS IN THE UNITED STATES AND MORE FOR THE DISCRIMINATION WITH INMIGRANTS, FINISH SOMEDAY I HOPE THIS INJUSTICE AND LET NO DIFFERENCE PEOPLE.

  19. I think that we are living with racism, but not too notorious like when Martin Luther King was alive. It's a completely shame because we are humans, we cannot think that we have more power than a black men, we cannot shout or hurt them. We must respect everyone.
Nowadays discrimination is not only with black people, is with indigenous, poorest and maybe with white too. Everyone have a different personality and some of them don't mind how the other person could feel.

  20. A situation I feel sorry for and I wish I could change...
There are many situation that I wish I could change, and not all are about discrimination. For example, when I lived in Barcelona, one night i saw in the news that a small group of teenagers thought that could be funny kill a homeless how slept in a atm. Why?Because they were boried, and that's all.;They just star a fire.
There are a lot of laws and a lot of rights, but sometimes that's not enought, not at all.I used to think about that kind of things, and the result is always the same: The most important education comes to our parents.

  23. I do not understand how people could do this, as God says we are all equal no matter the color, I think that today there is not that kind of abuse but there are still some people who think they are the most important skin type or another, we should all be proud of what we are and be kind to all people.
