Sense & Sensibility

Do you agree or disagree with these statements about the characters in the story? Choose one item and discuss your answers.

  1. In those times marriage was a practical business, so Lucy, being poor, was right to try to find the richest husband she could.
  2. Willoughby was not completely to blame for Marianne's broken heart. She should have been more cautious about allowing herself to fall in love with him.
  3. Edward should have been open about his feelings for Elinor, and broken his engagement to Lucy.
  4. Elinor knew that Lucy saw her as a rival, not as a friend, so there was no need for Elinor to keep Lucy's secret.

  1. I think that Edward should have been open about his feelings for Elinor, and broken his engagement to Lucy.He did not love Lucy and she would understand it,he would marry to Elinor. They would be happy forever and ever and Lucy could be with another man.By:Kruskaya Mejia

  2. 2 I disagree, Willoughby should not have built hopes up to her. He did a lot of things that for a girl are for love, like going to visit her everyday, hang out, read together. It's true that he never said that he loved her but his actions showed like he did. If he didn't want to be her he shouldn't have done all that things. by: Doménica Tamayo

    1. I agree with Domenica because Willoughby should have thought in the consequences of his actions. He only enjoyed sharing a little moment with Marianne. His interest in money was stronger than his feelings for her, so he decided to prefer to Grey.

  3. I disagree because I think that Willoughby was blame for Marianne's broken heart. It's true that he never said that he loved her, but he showed to Marianne with his actions that he "fall in love with her". And for that reason, Marianne confused her feelings and thought that Willoughby feel the same. ¡Willoughby built hopes up to Marianne!

  4. I DISAGREE BECAUSE WILLOUGHBY SHOWED ALL THE TIME WITH HIS ACTIONS THAT HE WAS INTERESTED IN MARIANNE. HE DIDN'T THINK ABOUT SENSIBILITY AND EMOTIONS OF HER WHEN DECIDED GOT MARRIED WITH OTHER WOMAN. MARIANNE ONLY BELIEVED IN HER FEELINGS SHARED WITH HIM. WILLOUGHBY'S BEHAVIOUR WAS'NT ENOUGH MATURE TO CARRY OUT A SERIOUS ENGAGEMENT WITH MARIANNE.BY WENDY JÁCOME RIVERA.

    1. I agree with that because Willoughby showed to Marianne with his actions that he interested or fall in love to Marianne. He wasn't enought mature because he built hopes up with Marianne's feelings.

  5. I agree that Edward should have been open about his feelings for Elinor, and broken his engagement to Lucy. There were several problems due to silence their feelings. Edward did not love Lucy. Elinor suffered too much from that situation, although she didn’t like to show her feelings. I believe that what happened in the book was very good. Lucy just wanted to marry someone who had money. She married Robert (Edward's brother). Thus, Edward and Elinor could live their love freely, without hiding anything.

I agree with the statement .in that time. As you said ,marriage was completely a business . So lucy being poor was correct looking for the richest man she could find

  8. Edward should have been open about his feelings for Elinor, and broken his engagement to Lucy. I agree with this item because I think that if you really love someone, you should show it. In my opinion, those times were stupid giving more relevance to what people can say of an inappropriate behavior than their own happiness. Personally, I believe that sometimes in life have to do some stupid things to reach real hapiness and what other people thinks, do not matter a gherkin.

    1. Those times were really strange, but only people who lived then are able to understand.

  9. Willoughby was not completely to blame for Marianne's broken heart. She should have been more cautious about allowing herself to fall in love with him. I am disagree because Willoughby created false hopes to Marianne, being so attentive with her even though that he knew in the deep of his heart that he would marry with a wealthy woman. That is to be an traitor in any perspective.

  10. Edward should have been open about his feelings for Elinor, and broken his engagement to Lucy. I agree with that because Elinor fell in love and Edward gave reasons enough for do it. He showed himself as a single person but he was very closed about his feeling. it´s clear that he didn´t love to Lucy but for me the important it´s that all finished as it should be.

    1. I DISAGREE WITH THIS BECAUSE ELINOR WAS SO COLD WITH EVERYONE THAT YOU COULDN‘T REALIZE IF SHE WAS IN LOVE OR NOT. EDWARD WAS ENGAGED SO LONG WITH LUCY THAT IT WASN’T EASY FOR HIM BROKE THE ENGAGEMENT. HE DIDN’T KNOW ELINOR TOO MUCH HOW TO LEAVE LUCY AND MARRY HER. I THINK HE REALIZE IN THE PRECISE TIME THAT ELINOR WAS THE WOMEN FOR HIM. SEBASTIAN ROMERO

    2. I agree with you. But remember that in the past women shouldn't have been that expressive or affectionate.

  11. Edward should have been open about his feelings for Elinor, and broken his engagement to Lucy. I agree with that because Edward did not love Lucy because he loved elinor . furthermore , Lucy just wanted to marry someone who had money

  12. Edward should have been open about his feelings for Elinor, and broken his engagement to Lucy. I agree with that because Edward was too young when he decided to engage to Lucy but now he is enought mature to broke his enagement and be happy with the woman who now he loves "Elinor".

  13. 1.In those times marriage was a practical business, so Lucy, being poor, was right to try to find the richest husband she could. I DESAGREE WITH THIS, BECAUSE I DON’T THINK THAT MARRIAGE IS A PRACTICAL BUSINESS. YOU HAVE TO LOVE THE OTHER PERSON TO THINK TO MARRY HER OR HIM. MARRIAGE IS A LONG CONTRACT BETWEEN TWO PERSONS, SO IF YOU DON’T CARE ABOUT THE OTHER PERSON YOU WON’T LAST IN THE RELATIONSHIP. I DON’T LIKE THE PEOPLE THAT ARE INTERESTED IN YPUR MONEY, THOSE ARE MEAN PEOPLE AND YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT THEM. SEBASTIAN ROMERO
