Safety Procedures at Work

Hi there!

In this unit we have studied many aspects of safety, such as new vocabulary about safety hazards and language structures to express necessity and prohibition. There is a situation I want you to read and analyze:

Mario works in a factory. He’s worked there for a few months. The factory has a good safety-training program. Every employee is required to take a class and learn about keeping the workplace safe. Mario’s coworkers follow the safety rules, but Mario has noticed one unsafe practice at his workplace. Some of the emergency exits are locked, even though a big sign on the door says, “This door must be unlocked at all times during work hours.” Mario thinks that the emergency exits should be unlocked, but he doesn’t know what to do.

Take out your cell phones, tablets or laptops and in groups write Mario a short letter. Tell him what you think he should do. Explain.

  3. Dear Mario
I think it's a very uncomfortable situation, you should have reported to your manager, explaining the reasons why you need to have the open door while you are working, also you should discuss with your coworkers about that problem; in this way you can get a better answer from your manager.
I think you should ask him for some keys for all the group, therefore you can work in a safer way, I really hope that our advices can help you.
    Sincerely Wendy, Priscilla and Jose.

  4. Dear mario.
The propouse of this letter is for help you to solve the problem at you workplace .
First at all you have to repot the safty hazard to you boss , you should show you viewpoint about why is it dangerous ; such as:
1.- in a Fire emergency, workers must be able to go out of the factory, as soon as possible.
2.- you can say to your boss that the workers can get injured if they try to go out by forcing the lock.
3.-If the only way to scape is the emergency exit and this is locked people can get scared and could try to jump through the windows and die.
4.-If your boss don't listen to your blames, you should talk to your goverment inspector.
I hope that my tips help you to keep your partners and you safe.:)

  5. Dear Mario

According to your problem we have got the conclusion in order to help you that you
    have to follow this advices:

Firstly you have to report this situation to your supervisor, maybe he doesn't know
    about the locked doors.
Secondly you should have to make a survey with you coworkers to know how many
employee are aware about this dangerous situation for all staff inside the company.
Finally when everybody have been informed, managers and workers must agree to leave
the emergency doors unlocked during the work hours.

    We hope to help you.

    Sincerely yours,

    Sebastian, Dora and Nicole

  8. Wow. That's crazy. Why would they even do that? Maybe someone should read the Fair Labor Standards Act to them or something, heh. Or maybe a dictionary. This is why not only safety measures are needed in the workplace, but a safety culture as well.

  10. Dear Mario
I am really impressed about the good safety-training program in your workplace, likewise that you and your coworkers have learned about keeping the workplace safe and also that all of you follow these safety rules. However it is a contradiction that some of the emergency exits are locked during work hours. It is clear the reason why you are worried about this situation because the emergency exits must always be unlocked, for emergency situations could happen at any time and evacuation is an essential part of preventing injuries and ensuring the safety of the employees.
I think that you should talk with your coworkers about this trouble, in order to look for a good solution. You can write a letter to your manager for expressing your point of view and all of the employees can sign it, thus the manager will be obligated to give you a good explanation about this problem.
I hope that you can solve this difficulty very soon.
    Sincerely yours,
    Rocìo.

  11. Good Night Teacher,

    These are my advices:

First at all, If Mario found the emergency exit door locked, he inmediatly have to REPORTED IT to his boss or to Department General Manager, because, according the "good safety-training program", all emergency exit door must be opened, in case of course any deep accident; contrary case, that workplace would not be so safe.
