Senior 2: Slavery, Racism & Segregation

Dear Students,

While reading the book and watching the videos about Martin Luther King and crucial events against segregation, I could learn how hard life for black people was in the past. It is unbelievable how the whole world watched these inhuman, cruel, brutal events that African Americans endured and nobody could do anything to solve this situation. Nowadays, in my opinion (and I am sure you agree with me) all these attacks look ridiculous since it is really hard to understand how people used to judge someone based on the color of his/her skin.

What about today? There might be similar events that future generations will find intolerant and completely unnecessary. Post a comment describing a situation you feel sorry for and you wish you could change.

  1. It’s true, the racism and segregation showed the cruel and inhuman that the man can be. But the man is able to be anything for indulge himself, Yasunni Itt is an example about this , nature is attacked in exchange for a few million. People only think in themselves and not in future generation.

  2. Hello. A situation that I want that change is the destruction of the nature. I think that the world is our house and we are the owners, so we have to protect it, but a lot of people are doing something different. In the world there are many killings to animals, fellings and burning of trees, air and rivers pollution, and some more unfair things against of the nature. Our world is really beautiful and we must take care of it for the future generations.

    1. I agree with Mariella because the nature is the most important thing that we have and it provides us a lot of benefits, so we must change and protect our mother nature because if we don't do that our future generations will suffer the devastating consequences.

  3. I want to change the alcohol and drugs these are two social threats that are killing people. People have to understand they are bad for our life because these destroy families, friendships, relationships and some many types of love. I hope that people make conscience and help others or maybe leave this addiction which damage our body and mind.

  4. Hi, I think that the future generation will found the Arab-Israeli conflict as unnecessary. This conflict has been around for a long time and it still occurs. There have been more than seven thousands losses from both sides. I hope that the conflict solves by a pacific and talkative way, because they realized how destructive it was. I think that solving the conflict by this way makes possible that, when a new problem occurs, the authorities will attempt to search a non violent solution. It's difficult but not impossible, and it would give the new generations a good example.

    1. Right there. It's hard to know these kinds of things still happen. No matter how advanced our technology is, sometimes it seems we are still in prehistoric times.

  5. Hi everyone I think that those actions were very foolish, because all of us have te same rights , and the same laws to obey . Nowadays I have a lot of friends including white, black, and asian people .
Few days ago I saw a group of children bullying a small black kid .I don't want to se those children abusing of another one , so I told them not to abuse of others ,it does'nt matter if they're asian black or white . I hope everyone do that .Nobody have to abuse others

    1. It is true I agree with you. Many times children are bullying others kids for their differences and I think those children who bully learn this in their families and in Tv. They think it is ok to laugh for the color of skin, etc. It is really bad

  6. I think that segregation still happens now. How?. The segregation takes place in the first world, they don't give the same oportunities to our people, and in the term "OUR PEOPLE" it's referred to latin american people, I mean the third word. I have seen that they prefer their own people until now. If you want a place for work, you will have to be better than them, and any time they don't even take us in their minds only for that. It's really hard to succed in that world. They don't give an equal oportunities in employments. In the first world you really have to be more than excellent in yours abilities and skills, maybe this advice can help you to take a place. If you had some of these requirements, you would probably get a space in those society with some luck. I think this is a kind of segregation too.

    1. You're right! And it's ironic that in Ecuador it happens the other way around: we prefer foreigners instead of local people.

  7. The word Segregation has been used for black people, but the hide intention of that, is to separate us, the society frecuently categorize people by their position, their jobs, their believes, or their special capacities, not only by their skins, and I always see this kind of intolerance and that begins with parents in fact we must teach to our childrens that the most important is “live in community “ and that means to be tolerant and respect the human rights. 8. Racisms still happens, In USA people are judge by their race, most with latin. Most americans( no everybody) think that we go to their country just because we want the easy life or we ask For help to the state, benefits, as food stamp, medicare, or money.
I know that couple months ago a spanish girl spoke spanish in her job and just for that she was fired. when I was there I saw many times, when hispanic men walking on the street the police would ask for their documents, and sometimes they didnt have , because they were illegal. but they are illegal not because they want... those people work really hard to send money to their families . I think is unfair for us.

  9. One problem more common nowadays live ecuadorian people that leave their home looking for a better future abroad, although there are some of them who don't have degrees, most of ecuadorian that go out with profesional preparation get jobs like a worker in hotel or restaurants as vallet parking for instance, because ecuadorian university degrees don't be valued to apply for a job in their field, and if you want to get a better job the only way is to study again or get a licence so to do that you need money so... Another situacion is the attitude of abroad people with hispanic people, they feel superior and they abuse of them I hope that these situacion change as soon as posible.

  10. I really believe that future generations will feel that was totally absurd and cruel mistreatment of animals.
I wish this change, I think I am correct in believing that animals deserve respect and in the future as everything progresses, my hope is that awareness so that people do realize that there is no reason to abuse animals. Just as today we find absurd that years ago people discriminate against others because of their skin color so it will seem to future generations the mistreatment of animals. Or at least I hope ...

  11. I think that was horrible , the things that happened not only in Alabama, in all states of USA this is the proof that racism has always existed, and even in this days the racism still exist and we have to change it.
In the future our childrens have to have a different mentality but we have to show them with actions, givin' them the example.

  12. I think that future generations will find unbelievable about discrimination against GLBT people. Today many countries have laws against them, in muslims countries even they can be murdered only for their orientation. In many states of USA you can get fired if your boss notice your orientation. In Ecuador things have got better for GLTB people but still there are many things to change here and in the whole world.

  13. NOWADAYS AROUND THE WORLD INCLUDED ECUADOR, WE LIVE IN CONSTANTLY ABUSES AGAINST THE RIGHTS OF HUMANS, ANIMALS AND THE NATURE, WE DESTROY THE ENVIROMENT KILLING OUR OWN LIFES, I'M REALLY HURT WHEN I HAVE TO SHARE A WORLD WHEN PEOPLE REFUSES TO RESPECT AND TAKE CARE OF THE EARTH. I TRUST IN FUTURE GENERATIONS WILL BE THE REALS DEFENDERS OF THE LIFE.

  14. I feel sorry about how we discriminate all the people that are differents of us, like indigenous, black people, homosexuals or people with different believes. This is discrimination and we have to change it, because this cause violence and is a bad example for our kids. We never know when this will happen to us, so we have to try to understand the different.

  15. When I think in the discrimination the word more indicated that I can define is "INJUSTICE", to humans rights that the black people practice, they have showed through time which the belief and concepts about their color of skin have been falses,so we could change it beginning into our consciences and influencing for the unity between all people without ideologies about racism or cultures which develop conflicts and disagreements.

  16. Good Night Teacher,

Well, I have had countless situations of those which I have felt so sorry about, as example: when I was a little girl, I had many pets in my house, so, I was devoted a lot to them, in fact, I am a great lover of the animals and for that reason, I have always liked to have mascots in my house; but regrettably, anything is forever and when my small ones died, my mom and I suffered a lot for them. In respect to what I would have changed, it would have been If I could have tried safe them.
